In Canvas, "Assignments" refers to any scored student work--online submitted assignments, unsubmitted activities, scored or even Quizzes. Assignments can be grouped to make grade weighting easier, and teachers can quickly and easily score Assignments using the SpeedGrader.

Creating an Assignment

New Assignments can be created from a course's Assignments area by clicking Add assignment to....

An assignment can be any of the following types:

* Assignment

* Discussion

* Quiz

* Ungraded

Assignments can be submitted any of the following ways:

* On Paper

* Online

* No submission

On Paper Submissions

On Paper submissions are assignments which are submitted in class or non-electronically. Although On Paper submissions are not submitted through Canvas it is still advantageous to add these assignments to Canvas so they can be tracked in the Canvas grade book.

Online Submissions

Online submissions can be done through the following methods:

File Upload - Upload an electronic file.
Text Entry - Enter the submission into a text box.
Website URL - Student submit the URL of a web page. Canvas takes a snapshot of this web page as soon as it is submitted.
Media Upload - Upload or instantly record video or audio.

Student file submission size	50MB maximum. However they may be able to upload zipped files that are higher MB. Canvas will not deduct student file submissions from the overall course size limit of 1G.
Student submission of zip files	Yes, students can submit zipped files. However, if you download all of them at once, Canvas creates a zip file and the file name may have a .zip extension that would need to be renamed to unzip.

No Submission Assignments

A "No submission" assignment creates a graded item (and also a column in the Gradebook), but does not allow student submission. This would be ideal for things like attendance, participation, etc. Teachers can set up a rubric for "No submission" assignments, which can be used through the SpeedGrader.

Peer Review Assignments

Using the Peer Review feature in Canvas, students can review, score, and give feedback on each other’s work.

To set up Peer Reviews, inside the Assignment's settings:

1. Under More Options check Require Peer Reviews

2. By selecting Automatically Assign Peer Reviews, this will redistribute student submissions after the assignment due date has passed. Simply set the number of reviews each student will receive, and when you want the assignments to be distributed. If you want the assignment to be viewed by all students, enter the total number of students in the class and enter the assign reviews date.

3. By selecting Manually Assign Peer Reviews, this lets you return to the Assignment review page and select Peer Reviews to make your own re-assignments.

4. Set the date when assignments have to be reviewed by. This must come after the due date.

Note: The lock date prevents submissions, but doesn't prevent reviews. If a submission comes in after the submission due date, but before the review due date, it is not automatically reassigned for review.

Grading Peer Review Assignments

Learners’ peer review scores of their classmates’ work does not appear in the Gradebook, though they are visible to the instructor.

After learners have completed their peer reviews, instructors can review those reviews, and assign their own scores to the submission. Student peer reviews are visible through the Speed Grader.

Assignment Rubrics

A rubric can be created for any Assignment to provide students with detailed criteria on the assignment requirements, and to make grading of assignments quicker and more consistent.

A rubric can be added to an Assignment after the Assignment has been created. Simply navigate to the assignment and click Add Rubric.

Ungraded Assignments

Ungraded assignments are assignments that don't receive a grade. An ungraded assignment may be used for a reading assignment or a practice quiz.

Note: Ungraded assignments do not have a column in the Gradebook.
